Title: Mr. First Name: Fred Last Name: Worthen Rank: LCDR Division: G Division Years Served: 1960, 1961, 1962 Country: USA Telephone: (505) 881-1805 Current Occupation: Career Navy, retired, (Mustang) Current Home City: Albuquerque, NM Comments: WORTHEN -- Fred V.T. Worthen, age 75, passed away Wednesday evening, October 2, 2002 at his home with his loved ones by his side. He was born May 12, 1927 in Sherman, Texas. He joined the Navy at 17 and spent the next 30 years in the service of his country. He married Virginia Baker in 1957 and had two children, Stewart and Denise. Together they lived the life of a Navy family, moving many times and adjusting to new places and Dad's frequent absences. Dad began his Navy career as an enlisted man and rose to officer rank, retiring in 1973 as a Lt. Cmdr. After retirement, he settled in Albuquerque, near his mother, Marion (Brooks) Worthen; his sister, Margaret Castillo and her husband, Toby; and their sons, Vince and Paul. He spent the next 15 years as a substitute teacher for APS, retiring for good in 1991. In later years, he became an enthusiastic member of several ship's company associations, including those for the USS Quick, the USS Galveston, the USS H.J. Thomas and the USS Lynde McCormick. Nearest his heart, though, was the USS Orleck Association. Nothing gave him more pleasure than getting together with his Orleck shipmates, laughing, arguing and reminiscing about the old days. He never missed an Orleck reunion until this year, when illness prevented his attendance. He leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Virginia; and daughter, Denise and husband, William Olson. He was preceded in death by his son, Stewart E. Worthen, in 1986. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret Castillo of Albuquerque; brother, Paul Worthen of Las Vegas Nevada; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dad's memory can be made to the American Cancer Society. Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, October 8, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. in the Fitzgerald Chapel, 3113 Carlisle N.E. The arrangements for Fred V.T. Worthen are under the direction of Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors, 3113 Carlisle N.E.
